Boeing B-52 Bomber Gets Weapons Compartment Upgraded

22 January 2015. Strategic bomber aircraft, Boeing B-52 Stratofortress of United States Air Force gets upgrade in weapons compartment.

The aircraft has not received any upgrade since first flight in 1954. Boeing aims the B-52 able to carry satellite-guided conventional munitions as well as attack munitions internally.

The modified B-52 has upgraded rotary launcher from carry nuclear weapons to carry conventional weapons. Boeing's crew and USAF technicians work together installing modified weapons compartment launcher.

Edwards Air Force Base in California become the center of upgrading effort for this Boeing B-52.

In the future, Boeing B-52 is expected able to carry stand-off munitions, like Raytheon ADM-160 the air-launched decoy and Lockheed Martin AGM-158 the air to surface standoff missile.

Relocated weapons into the internal compartment or bays must reduce fuel consumption by 15 percent, Boeing claimed. In other hand, moving the weapons internally, Boeing B-52 able carry more cruise missiles, that is one of good advantage.

Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is a strategic bomber aircraft that has long-range flight in subsonic speed. The giant strategic bomber able to carry about 32 tonnes of weapons and has been operated by USAF since 1950. Nowadays, there are 85 aircraft are still active and nine other set to be reserve aircraft.
