KAI Completed Surion Transport Helicopter Maiden Flight
26 January 2015. The national-aviation-manufacturer of Korea, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has successfully conducted maiden flight of Surion transport helicopter.
KAI says the Surion is an amphibious assault operations helicopter.
This helicopter is made by optimizing some features especially for South Korean Marines. Those are auxiliary fuel tank and foldable main rotor. The main safety feature is a emergency floats capability as helicopter ditching (landing on water surface), this system can be deployed, so passengers on board will have more time in evacuation attempt during crashed.
KAI's spokesperson said that the development program spent more than US$ 730 million.
KAI Surion has completed ground tests, backward flight as well as forward flight and hovering maneuver. The maiden flight took at KAI factory in Sacheon.
Following this maiden flight, in coming months the helicopter will have several environments test in cold and hot weather and aboard on ships. The mass production will begin afterwards.
